Henrietta grad hurt in Iraq
Army Sergeant First Class Perry Allen Meeks, a 1989 graduate of Henrietta High School, suffered life-threatening injuries April 21 while serving in Iraq.
A member of the 101st Airborn Division, Meeks was stationed at a forward operating base near Beiji, a town of 200,000 in northern Iraq. Meeks was returning to base from a mission when an IED was detonated near his MRAP, or Mine Resistant Ambush Protected vehicle.
Meeks was among eight sharing the vehicle. As platoon seargant, his was the last in a long convoy.
The sergeant, in his third tour to Iraq, said he was thrown about 75 feet by the explosion, which caused some facial fractures, a punctured spleen caused by broken ribs, four fractures in his left collar bone and a broken tibia in his left leg.

Turkey Fest was a success again
With an estimated net profit in excess of $10,000, the second annual Clay County Turkey Fest and Expo, April 10-12, was not only a festive success, but a financial success, said TF&E Chairperson Deborah Clark, paving the way for Turkey Fest ‘09.
Produced by the Henrietta and Clay County Chamber of Commerce, proceeds earned from the hunting festival will go towards promoting business and tourism in the county. The chamber is led by president Theresa Guieri. The Turkey Fest Committee is a part of the chamber.
Clark said the chamber board of directors will consider how to allocate the festival’s earnings, and that several ideas already in discussion would create ways to spruce up the county and support events to bring in more visitors.
On example is the promotion and maintenence of the chamber’s Clay County Outdoors website (claycountyoutdoors.org), which continues to get hits from hunters looking for day and season leases. A portion of the 2007 proceeds went toward creating the website. That, along with some supplies are not recurring costs, leaving more in the till to grow next year’s event.
Sponsorships helped increase the festival’s profits, paying for many of what Clark described as “hard expenses,” such as renting the Pioneer Hall for the expo and Holman Center for the Friday night Full Strut Banquet. General support from the City of Henrietta also helped.
Clark said proceeds from the silent auction and live celebrity hunt auctions were the “gravy” of this year’s even, and thanked the buyers.
While it’s difficult to estimate tourism dollars spent in the county, said Clark, its fare to say that local businesses, restaraunts and the hotel received a boost through the Turkey Fest and Expo.
